Windows 10/11 Update: Here's How to Set Your Default Browser Now

How to Set Your Default Browser Now

In February 2024's update KB5034763 (Windows 10) and KB5034765 (Windows 11)Microsoft introduced a new driver that affects how software interacts with your default web browser settings. Previously, some programs offered the option to automatically set your default browser during installation or through specific features. But this functionality is no longer possible with the new driver.

2)WHY THE CHANGE?

The reason behind Microsoft's move isn't entirely clear. But, some speculate it's a strategic decision to promote Microsoft Edge, the company's built-in browser. However, timing also coincides with the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) coming into effect in March 2024.

The DMA aims to create a fairer digital marketplace by regulating the practices of large tech companies. One aspect of the DMA focuses on user choice, particularly regarding default settings. Perhaps Microsoft's update is a way to pre-emptively comply with these regulations, specifically in the European Economic Area (EEA).

3)STILL IN CONTROL: MANUALLY SETTING YOUR DEFAULT BROWSER

While automatic software changes are blocked, but you can still manually set your preferred browser as the default.

PRO TIP:

If you use a specific browser frequently, so you can also set it as the default during its installation process. Most browsers offer this option during setup.

4)EXCEPTIONS EXIST: WHEN SOFTWARE CAN STILL CHANGE DEFAULTS

There are a few exceptions to the new driver's limitations. Software specifically designed to manage your default applications, with your permission, can still make changes. Additionally, system administrators may have control over default settings in corporate environments.

5)BEYOND BROWSERS: THE POTENTIAL IMPACT

While the current focus is on web browsers, but it's worth considering if this driver change might affect other default applications in the future. But, Microsoft hasn't provided any official statements on this possibility, so we'll have to wait and see.

Now in conclusion, the new Windows driver might seem like a hurdle at first, but it doesn't prevent you from choosing your preferred web browser. By manually setting your defaults through Windows settings, you can maintain control over your browsing experience.
